Apps For You And Your Dog | Dog Training In Your Home Columbia

Apps from the Fun to Functional

As the dog world becomes more tech-savvy, new apps keep popping up. Here are some functional and fun dog-related apps you might want to check into:

Medical

  • Pet First Aid (American Red Cross) – Available on Apple iOS and Google Android; cost: $0.99. This app is for both dogs and cats. You can add your pet’s medical records and information, veterinarian’s phone number, and you can even locate vet offices and urgent-care centers accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association.
  • PetMD Pet Symptom Checker – Available on Apple iOS and Google Android; cost: FREE. If you have used PetMD’s online symptom-checker, this is the mobile companion.  Also for both dogs and cats.  Easy to navigate, it does NOT substitute for your veterinary care, and there is an option to “Find Vets” so you can take your dog to be diagnosed and treated.

Rescue

  • Petfinder – Available on Apple iOS and Google Android; cost: FREE. This app provides a directory of over 14, 000 animal shelters and rescue groups in North America.  You can search for adoptable pets, and can even try and match you with your new best friend.
  • Barkbuddy– Only available on iOS; cost: FREE. You select your basic criteria then scroll through pictures meeting that criteria to select your favorites and get more information on them.

Games (dog-themed, of course!)

  • Dogs Playing Poker – only available on iOS; cost: FREE but has in-app purchases. You get to become a dog and play poker against other canines.  Each dog has it’s own “tell” (or is it “tail”?) for all you poker players, so finding out each one can be fun 🙂
  • Operation Smoochy – only on iOS, cost: FREE. Smoochy is here to save the streets (and boxes of helpless puppies) safe from monsters.  Good for teens and those of us who are older ;-P
  • Pug Run – Available on iOS and Android; cost: FREE, but has in-app purchases. Great for pug lovers! An animated pug must get to the boy who wants to adopt him, gathering coins and avoiding obstacles.

Dog Apps

  • I to Eye– Only available on iOS; cost: FREE but with in-app purchases. You get to look at yourself and the world from your dog’s perspective.
  • Puppy Dog Fingers – Only available on iOS; cost: FREE but you can upgrade to the no-ads version for $0.99. Cartoon puppies merge into real-world situations with your iPhone or iPad camera.  You can manipulate the puppies by moving your device or tapping the screen.
  • The Daily Puppy – Available on iOS and Android; cost: FREE. You get a post/information of a different puppy every day, or you can change it to an adult dog.

Travel Apps

  • DogVacay – iOS; cost: FREE. This app helps you find a place to board your dog, and you can even become a “host” on the app and dog-sit for other people’s dogs.  If you have used the online version of DogVacay.com, this is the mobile companion.
  • Dog Friendly (by I Love Dogs, Inc.) – iOS and Android; cost: FREE. Easily find hotels, motels, restaurants, stores, dog parks and beaches, and attractions that are dog-friendly while you are traveling.  You can even call them directly from the app, get maps and directions, and the option to share the location via social media (if you needed to set up a play date!)
