BABY PREP
How Do I Prepare My Dog for a Baby?
So you’re expecting – CONGRATULATIONS! While it is super exciting for us as humans to anticipate and welcome a new bundle of joy into the world, it can really alter your dog’s life and routine. Some dogs do really well, while other need a little more help getting used to the adjustment. Our clients often ask us: “How do I prepare my dog for a baby?”, and we’re happy to help with training and baby prep before the baby arrives.
Think about it: your dog has been used to a certain way of living, certain rules, and certain expectations. Those are all about to change when the baby arrives! If this is your first child, here are a few examples of changes to expect:
- Schedule: your sleeping and eating habits are about to get thrown way out of routine – which can also change your dog’s routine.
- Affection and attention: your dog is used to getting a certain amount of your time, and when a new baby comes, that amount of time changes.
- New “toys”: granted, they are supposed to be for the baby, but your dog doesn’t know that. And a lot of the squeak! Think of how confusing this can be for a dog who loves their squeaky toy and doesn’t understand the difference.
- New temptations: yes, diapers included. But also new habits can form like hanging around the high chair because they know food will eventually drop.
- You’re on the floor more: will your dog understand you’re not wanting to wrestle with him right now?
Preparing your dog for a baby is always a good idea, and we can help you navigate all the questions and concerns. From keeping your dog away from the high chair to tips for introducing the baby when they first come home. Give us a call to see how we can start preparing your dog for your new baby!
As you can see, we can also help with older kids, too!
