Dog Enrichment Ideas | Dog Training In Your Home Columbia

Turning Everyday Items Into Food Puzzles

Let’s face it: you love playing with your dog and providing toys, but sometimes those dog enrichment toys can get expensive.  So, it’s time to get creative with stuff around your house.  Here are a few ideas for dog enrichment that you can do on your own:

Muffin-tin food puzzle.

  • Supplies:
    • 12-cup muffin pan
    • 12 tennis balls
    • handful of treats
  • Place the treats in the cups (you can either put a treat in each cup, or vary it by putting treats in just a few) and place the tennis balls on top of all the cups.
  • Place the muffin tin on the floor and call your dog over.
  • Guide them to the muffin tin if you have to, but once they smell the treats they should be able to figure it out on their own!

Some other ideas for dog enrichment:

  1. Use cardboard boxes (we mentioned this in last week’s blog)
  2. Use paper-towel or toilet-paper rolls to dispense treats
  3. Freeze treats or toys in broth or water for hot sunny days (use paper cups for freezing, then just peel the cup away!)

We hope you enjoyed some of these ideas for dog enrichment! Let us know if you tried any and how they worked 🙂
